How to choose the right electric mountain bike

Before buying, we recommend that you consider the following criteria to find the right electric mountain bike. This mainly concerns the condition, quality and characteristics of the bicycle equipment.

Motor

The motor is usually fixed in the center of the crankset level or in the wheel. When buying, it is best to choose a mountain e-bike with a mid-mounted motor. This position provides better bike weight distribution, simple and easy steering, and optimal stability due to the low center of gravity.

Regarding the power of this motor, the maximum authorized power of electric mountain bikes is 250W, but in actual production, electric bicycle manufacturers can usually achieve more than 1000W. Torque is variable, ranging from 40 Nm to 100 Nm, depending on the model you choose. The higher the torque, the easier it is for your full suspension to overcome climbs.

Battery

Associated with the engine, the battery is undoubtedly one of the key elements of your electric mountain bike. It is installed in the frame and gives the bike a more design feel. Generally speaking, the battery of a full-suspension bike provides higher power than a conventional electric bike: this varies between 250 and 600 Wh.

The battery life will depend on the power of the battery and its voltage and capacity. In general, the higher the battery level you choose, the more battery life you’ll get, up to an average of up to 4 hours.

Pedal Assist

Pedal Assist is certainly the third criterion to consider when buying an electric mountain bike. You can choose between half Pedal Assist and full Pedal Assist or no Pedal Assist. Most full-suspension enthusiasts opt for semi-Pedal Assist. This provides a better feel of control, as the power of the bike can be adjusted appropriately based on the force during pedaling. In other words, the Pedal Assist system supports you in accelerating the bike when you pedal hard.

Control Panel

Like all electric bikes, electric mountain bikes are also equipped with a control panel. It comes in the form of a small screen for controlling the motorization of the bike. The simplest models display technical options such as battery level, speed, stopwatch, and driving distance. As for the most complete displays, they integrate other options such as GPS, Bluetooth and a USB port for charging the phone.

Weight

After the control panel, the next criterion to consider is the weight of the bike. An electric mountain bike is a heavy bike, but that’s normal because it has a specific configuration. The presence of a high-profile motor and battery also adds to its weight. Of course, the electric pedal assist system helps you not feel that weight. The central placement of the motor on the bottom bracket is also in your favor, as it guarantees optimal weight distribution.

Brake

Hydraulic disc brakes are most recommended for maximum safety and increased comfort on all terrains. For full-suspension electric mountain bikes, 160mm oversized discs are the most popular.

Tire

With wide 27.5″ and 27.5+ tires, the electric mountain bike will be easier to pedal and handle. These sizes of tires are more able to ensure good ground grip.

With these wide, easy-to-use, and versatile wheels, you’ll have the chance to excel in sports like Enduro, Freeride, and All Mountain.
